The Parlor was named after Sutter’s Mill. Sutter’s Mill was a water-powered sawmill on the bank of the South Fork American River in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. It was named after its owner John Sutter. A worker constructing the mill, James W. Marshall, found gold there in 1848.

The seal was chosen to represent Sutter’s Mill in the center. There is a replica of Sutter’s Mill located in Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. The Parlor’s meeting place is located across the street from Sutter’s Mill in Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park.
