BERRYESSA PARLOR NO. 192
Instituted June 11, 1911
Willows (Glenn County)
The story of how the Parlor took this name originated in
1823, when Juan and Mary Berryessa migrated to California by
boat and covered wagon from Spain. They settled in Berryessa
Valley, on what was then a Spanish land grant. The couple's
first child born in this country was Clara Berryessa. She was
the first white girl to be born in Santa Clara and was named
after the town.
Clara married Jessie Beasley, a soldier with General
Fremont's army. When Berryessa Parlor was instituted, the newly
organized Parlor was proud of having the oldest Native Daughter
in the state in person of Clara Beasley, age eighty-eight years,
as a charter member. Her maiden name having been the beautiful
Spanish one of Berryessa, the members, as a mark of respect and
honor to her, unanimously chose the name "Berryessa" for their
Parlor name. Clara Beasley is on the seal of the Parlor.
